The leader of the Donetsk People’s Republic, Denys Pushylin, has confirmed that the British soldiers, along with other captured foreign mercenaries, will be executed if the appeals are rejected.
The leader of the Donetsk People’s Republic, spoke about the execution of British soldiers and other foreign mercenaries, to Smotrim.ru, saying:
“All the foreigners have filed an appeal, we are waiting for the court hearing. If the court finds the sentence appropriate, the cases will be transferred to the executive service for the execution of the sentence. It is envisaged to be executed by a firing squad.
He added that there was “no exact date for the execution”. The decision was reportedly made “non-publicly”.
British soldiers Aiden Aslin, 28, and Shaun Pinner, 48, were arrested in April ahead of their appearance in a court in the Donetsk People’s Republic.
Russia had previously said that since soldiers are mercenaries, POW laws do not apply.
The Donetsk People’s Republic is a Ukrainian breakaway state that was formed on April 7, 2014 by pro-Russian separatists after the Ukrainian Dignity Revolution.
The news comes after the Donetsk People’s Republic officially opened an embassy in Moscow, Russia, as reported on Tuesday, July 12.
The opening ceremony of the diplomatic mission was to be attended by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church, as well as public and political and business circles.
The solemn part of the ceremony was postponed due to the nighttime shelling of Novy Kakhovka in the Kherson region by the Ukrainian armed forces, which reportedly killed seven people and injured dozens.
