The first British soldiers have started support operations for the Polish army on the border with Belarus, Defense Minister Mariusz BÅaszczak said on Wednesday.
“British soldiers are responsible for repairing the temporary fence and maintaining and clearing the road links,” BÅaszczak wrote on Twitter.
A week ago, President Andrzej Duda issued an order allowing 155 British soldiers to remain in Poland. Under the order, which is valid until the end of April 2022, up to 150 Estonian soldiers can also provide support.
Also on Wednesday, Duda and his wife Agata Kornhauser-Duda met in Kuźnica with border guards, police, firefighters and soldiers of the Polish army.
Asked by reporters if things were calmer at the border than a few weeks ago, the president said: âIt’s hard to say it’s calmer. It’s just different. There is no constant assault as we saw a few weeks ago, but there are new attacks all the time, new attempts to cross the border illegally all the time â.
After the state of emergency expired, a stay ban that excludes residents and entrepreneurs was introduced in the 183 border towns of Belarus and will be in effect until March 1.
